Discover Ballet & Degas: Paintings & Misty Copeland's History

Can a single performance encapsulate the weight of history and the thrill of artistic expression? Misty Copeland, a name synonymous with breaking barriers and redefining the boundaries of ballet, is on the cusp of doing just that, as she channels the artistry of Edgar Degas ahead of a new exhibition at New York's Museum of Modern Art.

The world of ballet, a realm of ethereal grace and rigorous discipline, has long captivated artists. Edgar Degas, a master of capturing fleeting moments, immortalized the beauty and the backstage realities of the ballet in his paintings. "Dancers, pink and green (ca. 1890)," is one such example, currently gracing the halls of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, showcasing Degas's fascination with ballerinas on stage and in rehearsal. His focus on the ballet dancer, particularly the young ballerinas, marked a shift from his earlier works that focused on nude women. This transition occurred in a time when the ephemeral, feminine image of the ballet dancer stood in stark contrast to the titillating reputation the ballet had. The artist's modern approach further fueled this fascination.

Degas's legacy extends beyond mere aesthetics. His paintings offer a window into the social dynamics of the time. He captured the relationships within the ballet world, including the presence of patrons who supported these young dancers. He favored scenes of ballet dancers, laundresses, milliners (at the milliners, 1882; (29.100.38)), and denizens of Parisian low life, reflecting his modern approach to subject matter. His work "Blue dancers, sometimes referred to as dancers in blue," painted in 1890, is amongst the most famous Edgar Degas ballet dancer paintings. The stage curtains are painted frenziedly, and that whole side of the painting seems to be inching toward the sanctity of the star's glowing brilliance.

Art critic Paul Mantz, in his assessments of dancers, once used harsh words, describing them with prejudice, and that reflected the social biases of the time. However, as Griselda Pollock, a professor of the social & critical histories of art at the University of Leeds, points out, the portrayal of women, like those in knight's paintings, presented a shift in the way women were perceived in that century, which highlights the unique fascination of the trained and tuned body of the ballet dancer.

The world of dance encompasses a vast array of styles, from the passionate movements of flamenco and tango to the structured elegance of ballet and the social rhythms of the foxtrot. The choice of subject matter for ballet painting artists is varied, with a focus on the ballerinas and their unique world, the dance dresses, the satin shoes, the hairstyle, the dressing room, and the dance sequence. Many different dances, including flamenco, ballet, tango and the foxtrot, are portrayed in a wide variety of colors and artistic styles.

The exhibition at New York's Museum of Modern Art promises to explore the intersection of art and history. It will delve into the ways in which Degas captured the ephemeral beauty of ballet, and how Copeland, in her own right, continues to shape the narrative of dance. The works by Edgar Degas and other painters, such as douard Manet with his "Le Ballet Espagnol," featuring Lola de Valence and Mariano Camprubi, further enrich this cultural landscape. Camprubi was a principal dancer with a Madrid dance troupe.

The challenges in portraying ballet on canvas lie in capturing its essence. The unique nature of ballet dresses and the details of the satin shoes add complexity to the artist's task. Classic dance and modern art ballet is a deeply traditional art form, in which fixed steps, linked to each other in canonical ways, may be combined to create an infinite variety of dances. Lively choreography therefore demands inspired handling of the standard vocabulary, and proper performance requires disciplined training.

The exhibition will highlight the legacy of Degas and the influence it has on contemporary dancers. The various studies associated with the artists work, like the pastel depicting the dancer on the right (l421, present location unknown), and the three studies: one in oil on paper of both dancers (l409, British Museum, London), one in pencil of the dancer on the left (mr. Acquavella, New York), and one in charcoal of the dancer on the right (cabinet des dessins, muse d'Orsay, Paris), give insights on the making of art. It offers the opportunity to explore the interplay between tradition and innovation. The artists are exploring the possibilities of their art by portraying the different angles, forms, and aspects of ballet. Richard Kendall's work such as "Degas and the Little Dancer," published in New Haven and Omaha in 1998 (cat.), also adds to the critical discussion of the art of Degas.

The event is a tribute to Degas's vision and Copeland's ongoing contributions.
